Reflect on Hannah’s story:
1 Samuel 1; 2:1-11,18-21
For many years, Hannah has a deep longing; she wants a child. This unmet longing becomes her greatest sorrow.
Barren, Hannah cries out to God in anguish, giving expression to her deep longing and desire.
Hannah’s prayer:
Oh, God-of-the-Angel-Armies,
If you’ll take a good, hard look at my pain,
If you’ll quit neglecting me and go into action for me
By giving me a son,
I’ll give him completely, unreservedly to you.
I’ll set him apart for a life of holy discipline.
1 Samuel 1:10-11 (The Message)
And God answers Hannah’s raw and honest prayer! A year later, Hannah bears Samuel, who becomes a prophet, judge, and advisor to future kings.
Perhaps you’re like Hannah: You have an unfulfilled longing. Maybe you’ve asked God for this desire many years. And you’re still waiting, wondering if God hears your prayer.
Jesus invites you to bring your raw prayer—your anguish and your anger—to Him.
Pray:
God of the Angel Armies,
If You’ll take a good, hard look at my pain,
If You’ll quit neglecting me and go into action for me
By giving me a [_______],
I’ll give [_______] completely, unreservedly to You.
I’ll set [_______] apart for You alone.
